Every day we encounter opportunities to be God's voice, His hands, His feet here on earth. Please consider taking advantage of an extremely rewarding opportunity to touch the lives of our brothers and sisters behind prison walls, the prison pen-pal ministry of Mary Mother of Captives.

"I was in prison and you visited me," said Jesus in Matthew 25:36. Mary, Mother of Captives ministry is seeking pen pals to write to inmates in prisons in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, California, Georgia, North Carolina and elsewhere. Complete anonymity is guaranteed. Mail from the inmate goes first to Mary Mother of Captives in Philadelphia, and then is forwarded by the ministry to you. At no time does the inmate know your full name (penpals use only their first name and the first two or three letters of the last name), your home address or your telephone number. The penpal ministry is open only to people over age 18.

Do not neglect Christ suffering in our prisons. Break the tedium of prison life, encourage inmates to use the time of incarceration for spiritual and educational growth, and help to improve inmates’ writing skills so they can look forward to a more rewarding life both in, and later out of, prison.

All of us can find fifteen minutes a week to reach out to some of our society's most isolated people.  And all of us know someone with a little more time, perhaps a lonely or elderly person to whom this ministry could be a blessing.  Please consider at least passing on this information, perhaps even asking your church to feature it in its weekly bulletin.

Here's what people writing to inmates through the MMOC Pen Pal Program have to say about it:

"When I received the invitation from Mary, Mother of Captives to write to prisoners, I felt as if God was giving me a special gift.  After forty years in active ministry as a religious, I had just begun full time home ministry.   Being able to write to the men in prisons afforded me an opportunity to be involved in Christ's ministry of compassion while caring for my sick aunt..."

"I have gained as much as I have given in my correspondence..."                                     Jeanne

"...I've found that a little effort goes a long way...Just receiving personal mail from someone who cares seems to be the biggest asset of our correspondence for him and my own reward is having my own small effort appreciated..."                                                        Anita
